ABOUT BMI
Why use a BMI Calculator?
BMI (Body Mass Index) is a very simple measure based on weight and height, which is widely used to assess if a person is of a healthy weight. However, the process of measuring BMI using a BMI calculator has been around since the 1830s and is often criticised because it is very limited in its scope. For example, it doesn’t distinguish between fat and muscle. The latter tends to be heavier and can tip more toned individuals – even very healthy, power-focussed athletes such as rugby players – into overweight status, even if their fat levels are low. Another main flaw of the BMI is the indirect measure of the fat that doesn’t take into account sex, age, bone structure, or fat distribution.
Despite its limitations, measuring your BMI is always an interesting exercise – and using a BMI caclulator can be a useful first step in helping you to assess your current fitness levels and start setting goals for improvements.
